ヨセミテのお話でしたが、こうやって英語を調べつつ、自分の知らないことを調べるのはなかなか楽しいです。
"Hello, where are you guys from? What are you gonna do in Yosemite? Is it the first time to visit CAMP4?"
When we were putting up a tent soon after arriving, a friendly guy with dense beard came to us. As I looked at his feet, I noticed he was barefoot.
"It's more comfortable to be barefoot in the nature, isn't it? I go anywhere without my shoes. The only exception is when I enter shops. I even walk on a trail with bare feet." said with laughing the barefoot old man and he grabbed some stones on the ground and began juggling with them. He looks quite free in everything.
We are now in CAMP4.
CAMP4 is the only walk-in caravan site in Yosemite Valley. It is said that there used to be CAMP1 to CAMP3, 5 and 6, but now only CAMP4 remains.
Different from other caravan sites in Yosemite Valley, it's not allowed to enter the site by car and it's a little bit hard to load and unload luggage, but it's popular and always crowded.
The fee is six dollars for one night, which is much more cheaper than other accommodations in Yosemite Valley. However, the reason why people gather to CAMP4 is not only its fee.
Once here was a cutting-edge base for climbers who tackled Yosemite Bigwall. The beginning of 60's was its heyday and legend climbers such as Royal Robbins, Tom Frost, and Warren Harding, also known as Batso literally settled down here. Yvon Chouinard, who established Patagonia was one of them and made his life by selling handmade climbing gears in a parking area in CAMP4, which has become a famous story now.
